Biological target:
Schizandrin inhibits breast cancer cell growth by inducing G0/G1 phase cell cycle arrest. Additionally, it protects rat cortical cells from glutamate-induced cytotoxicity, reduces nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and preserves mitochondrial membrane potential. Schizandrin also decreases apoptosis in cisplatin-treated human kidney cells. In vivo, schizandrin reverses scopolamine-induced memory impairment in rats and enhances oxotremorine-induced tremors in mice. It reduces serum levels of IgE, IgG1, IL-4, and IFN-γ in an ovalbumin-sensitized mouse model of allergy.
In vitro activity:
Schizandrin could have potential to treat inflammatory and atopic diseases through the inhibition of thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP). Schizandrin inhibited the production and mRNA expression of TSLP in human mast cell line HMC-1 cells. Schizandrin inhibited the translocation and luciferase activity of nuclear factor-κB. In the activated HMC-1 cells, the activation of caspase-1 was increased, whereas the activation of caspase-1 was decreased by pretreatment with schizandrin. In vivo activity:
Schizandrin could be a potential protective agent against lung-related inflammatory disease. In this study, schizandrin displayed anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activity against avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC)-induced lung lesions in chickens Schizandrin markedly inhibited pathological changes, pulmonary edema, MPO activity and MDA content.
