EDC-HCl is water soluble and reactions can take place at physiological conditions. The best results take place at pH of 5.5 or less when buffered in MES. Sulfo-NHS or NHS is used as a catalyst for EDC-HCl coupling and greatly increases the efficiency of the reaction.
