Isosorbide mononitrate is a medication primarily used for the treatment and prevention of angina pectoris, a condition characterized by chest pain or discomfort caused by reduced blood flow to the heart muscle. It belongs to a class of drugs called nitrates, which work by dilating (widening) blood vessels, particularly veins, to reduce the workload on the heart and improve blood flow to the heart muscle. Isosorbide mononitrate is converted into nitric oxide (NO) within the body. Nitric oxide is a potent vasodilator, meaning it relaxes and widens blood vessels. By dilating blood vessels, isosorbide mononitrate reduces resistance to blood flow, making it easier for the heart to pump blood and improving blood flow to the heart muscle itself.
