Dextromethadone (Discontinued) is an antitussive opioid. It is the (S)-enantiomer of methadone. Dextromethadone acts as a N-methyl-D-aspartate NMDA receptor antagonist similar to ketamine. There is now an asymmetric synthesis available to prepare both dextromethadone [S-(+)-methadone] and levomethadone [R-(−)-methadone]. Dextromethadone is discontinued (DEA controlled substance, DEA Schedule II).
