Benzoylmesaconine is an alkaloid that has been found in A. carmichaelii and has diverse biological activities. It promotes isolated rat liver mitochondrial energy metabolism. Benzoylmesaconine increases survival in a mouse model of burn-associated herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) infection from 5 to 90%. It also increases the latency to tail withdrawal or a struggling response in a tail pressure test in mice.
