BPN-14136 is a novel Retinol-Binding Protein 4 (RBP4) antagonist that reduces serum retinol concentrations, thereby decreasing retinal bisretinoid synthesis linked to macular degeneration. In cynomolgus monkeys, oral administration of BPN-14136 resulted in a 99% reduction of serum RBP4, demonstrating strong bioactivity. Pharmacokinetic studies showed high compound exposure in non-human primates (NHP) with favorable pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. The study recommended NHP as the preferred non-rodent species for safety evaluation due to similarities in retinoid trafficking with humans
