Ibufenac is a propionic acid-class nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes to reduce prostaglandin synthesis, providing analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory effects. It was withdrawn from the market due to hepatotoxicity, attributed to reactive acyl-glucuronide metabolites that cause liver cell damage. Ibufenac’s safety concerns led to the development of safer alternatives like ibuprofen, which retains similar therapeutic effects with a better toxicity profile.
