Hycanthone is an antischistosomal agent and active metabolite of lucanthone, known for its activity against Schistosoma mansoni. It acts primarily by inhibiting RNA synthesis through intercalation into DNA and interfering with topoisomerase II activity. In vitro, Hycanthone exhibits cytotoxic effects in various cancer cell lines, with IC₅₀ values typically in the low micromolar range (e.g., ~3–10 µM in HeLa and L1210 cells). In vivo studies have shown significant reduction in worm burden in infected mice treated with 60 mg/kg/day orally for 3 days
