Enbucrilate (also known as NBCA, n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate) is a fast-polymerizing tissue adhesive widely used for topical skin closure and endovascular embolization. Its bioactivity is based on rapid anionic polymerization upon contact with ionic substances like water or blood, forming a solid bond that achieves hemostasis and tissue approximation within seconds to minutes. Studies show that Enbucrilate achieves effective vessel occlusion when injected intra-arterially in concentrations typically ranging from 20–50% mixed with Lipiodol for radiopacity and flow control. In clinical settings, Enbucrilate embolization has demonstrated high success rates for bleeding gastric varices (over 90% hemostasis) and arteriovenous malformations. However, it can trigger local inflammatory responses and carries a risk of non-target embolization due to its liquid nature, so precise technique is critical for safe application.
