WST-3 is a water-soluble tetrazolium dye commonly used in cell viability and cytotoxicity assays. In the presence of an electron mediator, such as 1-methoxy-5-methylphenazinium, WST-3 is reduced by NADH to form a water-soluble formazan product, which exhibits a dark red color. This color change can be quantitatively measured by its absorbance, providing an indicator of cellular metabolic activity.
