Byakangelicin is an inhibitor of aldose reductase and can be helpful in treatment of diabetic cataract. Byakangelicin is a coumarin that has been found in A. dahurica. It inhibits the activity of aldose reductase (IC50 = 6.2 µM for the bovine lens enzyme) and reduces cataract formation in a rat model of galactosemia when administered at a dose of 50 mg/kg per day. It reduces cartilage erosion and loss of proteoglycan in the inflamed joints in a mouse model of surgically induced osteoarthritis when administered at a dose of 10 mg/kg.
