Biological target:
Bisacodyl is a stimulant laxative agent that works directly on the colon to produce a bowel movement.
In vitro activity:
Bisacodyl (0.1–1 µM) concentration-dependently suppressed TGF-α-induced MUC5AC production (Fig. 1B). In the presence of TGF-α alone, MUC5AC in the culture medium was detected at 12 h, and its levels increased time-dependently. In vivo activity:
After one month of bisacodyl treatment, there were significant differences in the number of defecations, dry weight of feces, and intestinal transit time among the control rat group, STC group, and STC bisacodyl group (P=0.000). The number of defecations in the STC bisacodyl group was greater than that of the STC group (P<0.05), while dry weight of feces and intestinal transit time in the STC bisacodyl group were less than in the STC group (P<0.05) (Table 2).
