SL-651498 has anxiolytic and anticonvulsant effects in rodents that are not associated with physical dependence or the development of anticonvulsant tolerance. It also does not induce sedation at anxiolytic-relevant doses in rats.

SL-651498's profile suggests a role for GABA(A) alpha2 subtype in regulating anxiety, showing potential for drugs with improved clinical specificity. In tests on rats and mice, SL-651498 showed anxiolytic-like activity similar to diazepam but with fewer side effects like muscle weakness or sedation at effective doses.
