Tranexamic acid is an antifibrinolytic medication used to treat or prevent excessive blood loss from trauma, surgery, and in various medical conditions including hemophilia and heavy menstrual bleeding. It can be administered orally or intravenously. Tranexamic acid has been shown to reduce mortality due to traumatic bleeding by a third. Tranexamic acid interfers with cerebral GABA and glycine receptors.
