5-Carboxystrictosidine, which is found in the medicinal Mappianthus iodoides Hand.-Mazz. root, is a mitochondrial KATP channel activator with evidence suggestive of its potential use to prevent I/R injury of the heart. It was suggested the protective effects may be a result of antioxidant and decreased apoptotic effects achieved through the opening of mitochondrial KATP channels.
