AzoFPP-1 is a photoswitchable analog of farnesyl diphosphate that has been shown to allow for effective optical control of substrate prenylation by farnesyltransferase. Furthermore, this process has been the first successful case of transforming isoprenoid lipid into a photolipid. Photoswitchable lipids show promise in optically controlling lipid bioactivity, metabolism, and biophysical properties.
