(±)-Hydroxycitric acid (HCA) is a naturally occurring, chiral organic acid found predominantly in the rind of Garcinia cambogia fruit. It is best known for its potential anti-obesity effects, primarily through inhibition of ATP citrate lyase, an enzyme involved in the conversion of citrate to acetyl-CoA, thereby reducing de novo lipogenesis. The racemic mixture (±)-HCA includes both enantiomers, but the (-)-HCA is considered the biologically active form contributing to its metabolic effects.
