Description:

WARNING: This product is for research use only, not for human or veterinary use.

Sodium decanoate, or sodium caprate, is the sodium salt of caproic acid, a 10-carbon saturated fatty acid. It has amphiphilic character and can form micelles and liquid crystalline phases in aqueous solution. In a chemical model system, sodium caprate has been used in 13C NMR studies of the addition of hydrophilic and hydrophobic molecules to the 1-monooleoyl glycerol/water system, to elucidate the transport of biologically active molecules.

Biological target:
Sodium caprate selectively reduces glutamate-induced currents in Xenopus oocytes expressing GluA2 and GluA3 subunit-containing AMPA receptors (IC50 = 0.52 mM) over those expressing GluA1 (IC50 = 2.09 mM) or GluA1 and GluA2 subunits (IC50 = 1.16 mM).
In vitro activity:
Sodium caprate has concentration-dependent anticancer effects on gastric cancer cells, inducing both apoptosis and necrosis. Sodium caprate induced apoptosis in gastric cancer cells at concentrations above 0.2 mM through the mitochondrial pathway. At 15 mM, sodium caprate caused necrosis by triggering cellular swelling and creating holes in the cell membrane. Levels of cAMP and ATP significantly decreased with 15 mM sodium caprate exposure. In vivo activity:
Sodium caprate boosted antioxidant capacity, intestinal morphology, and the gut barrier in intestinal cells, enhancing the growth performance of mice through GPR-43 signaling. It increased weight gain and ileal villus height compared to control and sodium butyrate treatment, along with raising α-diversity of ileal microbiota, volatile fatty acids concentration, and GPR-43 expression in the ileum and colon of mice.
