Nitrosofolic acid, a synthetic derivative of folic acid bearing a nitroso (-NO) group, has been reported to exhibit selective cytotoxicity in cancer cells due to its redox-active nature. Limited bioactivity data indicate that nitrosofolic acid can induce oxidative stress and disrupt cellular redox homeostasis, leading to apoptosis in tumor cell lines. In vitro assays demonstrated dose-dependent inhibition of proliferation in human leukemia (HL-60) and breast cancer (MCF-7) cells, with IC₅₀ values reported around 10–20 µM. Its mechanism is thought to involve interaction with thiol-containing proteins and glutathione depletion, promoting ROS accumulation.
