Biological target:
meta-Cresol is a colourless, viscous liquid that is used as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals.
In vitro activity:
In the range of m-cresol concentrations used in the study, specific growth rate of the culture and specific degradation rates were observed to follow substrate inhibition kinetics. Biokinetic constants estimated from these two models showed good potential of the indigenous mixed culture in degrading m-cresol in wastewaters. Reference: J Hazard Mater. 2009 Feb 15;162(1):476-81. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18573608/
In vivo activity:
This study examined whether the RyR-mediated Ca(2+) release is involved in transmitter release at the rat calyx of Held synapse in brainstem slices. Bath application of 4-CmC (4-Chloro-m-cresol) caused a dramatic increase in the amplitude of excitatory postsynaptic currents (TIFCs) with the half-maximal effective concentration of 0.12 mm. 4-CmC markedly prolonged the duration of action potentials, with little effect on their rise time kinetics.
