Biological target:
Melamine is a metabolite of cyromazine. Melamine is a intermediate for the synthesis of melamine resin and plastic materials.
In vitro activity:
To explore the physiological relevance of such melamine-augmented calcium crystal formation, this study used 2-dimensional (2D) and 3D microfluidic (MF) device, embedded with PT cells, which also resembled the effect of melamine-stimulated CaP, CaOx and mixed crystal formation. Significantly, addition of preformed CaP and/or CaOx crystal in the presence of melamine, further potentiated those crystal formations in 3D MFs, which helped the growth and aggregation of mixed crystals. In vivo activity:
Prenatal melamine exposure (PME) was given by oral treatment to pregnant female rats through the whole gestational days with 400mg/day/kg bodyweight. The results of behavioral test showed that PME lead serious deficits of memory and re-acquisition abilities. PME depressed depotentiation in the hippocampal CA1 area of the PME group, but no alteration in LTP. Reference: Neurotoxicology. 2017 Sep;62:56-63. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28529052/
